Imagine receiving a dollar bill with In Cincinnati We Trust imprinted on it.
Would one of your first thoughts be Is this counterfeit money?
This is just not the case, instead this type of currency is a very real possibility
for Cincinnati. There is an ever-increasing interest in developing a local currency
and putting our energies into our own local economy.
What is complementary (or local) currency? It is a way of exchanging value with
others without being tied to the national currency system. The exchange can
be as simple as one Cincinnati Mother exchanging hours of babysitting with another
Cincinnati Mother. Or it can be as broad as a diverse group of local businesses
using an electronic or paper medium of exchange rather than US dollars.
Since the currency only operates within that community and can't be transferred
into or out of the community it never runs out. If a currency never runs out,
then there's always money. If there's always money, businesses can always trade,
people can always be employed, charities can always be helped. Cooperation and
sufficiency is the default rather than as exists now competition and scarcity.
Successful local currency systems are in use right now in cities across the United
States, from Gainesville, Florida to Berkeley, California. One of the most successful
local currencies is in Ithaca, New York with $95,000 worth of Ithaca Hours currently
in circulation.
And, the exciting news is that the movement is growing in Cincinnati!
